In honor of Veterans in the workplace, I am dedicating the next four articles to the importance and benefit of hiring Veterans. God Bless!

The reality is that those coming out of military service need a smooth transition into civilian life. These individuals are skilled, experienced, and possess high integrity and loyalty which can be hard to find in employees. I explain this in detail in my previous article.

Read Hiring A Veteran Can Benefit Your Organization (Part 1 of 4).

So now you want to focus on hiring a veteran. What is a good strategy to be most effective in the process?

Here are three things to keep in mind and help you in your journey to find some of the best employees out there:

  1. Use the Resources Available: Many programs available help companies and organizations find highly qualified candidates. Websites such as Military.com, HireVetsFirst.gov, TurboTap.org, HelmetstoHardhats.org, and USAJobs.gov are great resources for recruiting top veteran applicants.

These individuals are skilled, experienced, and possess high integrity and loyalty which can be hard to find in employees.

  1. Partner with Military Transition Programs: Collaborate with military transition programs like the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) or Hiring Our Heroes to access a talent pool of skilled veterans actively seeking employment opportunities. These programs offer resources, job fairs, and networking events to facilitate the transition from military to civilian careers.
  2. Translate Military Skills to Civilian Job Roles: Recognize veterans’ transferable skills and map them to suitable civilian roles. Provide training programs or apprenticeships to bridge knowledge or skill gaps and facilitate their successful integration into the civilian workforce. Military.com offers a free tool to aid in translating these roles.
  3. Establish Veteran Employee Resource Groups (ERGs): Create veteran ERGs within your organization to provide veterans support, mentorship, and a sense of community. These groups can help foster an inclusive work environment and enable knowledge-sharing and networking opportunities.

Recognize veterans’ transferable skills and map them to suitable civilian job roles.

Create an environment that attracts skilled veterans and supports their successful integration into your workforce. There are many resources available to do this effectively. And embracing these strategies will benefit your business and demonstrate your commitment to honoring the service and talents of those who have served our country.
